(Slides) * State of the art of the Common Printing Dialog developed by the OpenUsability team and discussion with ISVs, and desktop developers. Especially we will talk about the specifications of the dialog and the requirements from the desktop/application side. * How should the interface between application and printing dialog look like (RPC? Portland?)? * Which information should be exchanged between printing dialog and application? * Which data format should be used to tell the dialog which application-specific options it should show * How should the dialog return the user's selections on the application-specific options? * PDF as standard print job format: Report and discussion on the progress from the server side and the progress of desktop and application developers in letting applications send PDF to the printing system |

| 3:00pm - 4:30pm | Automatically Downloadable, Distribution-Independent Printer Driver Packages and Linux Distributions: Security, QA, and Automatic Updates Moderator: Till Kamppeter, OpenPrinting Manager, The Linux Foundation Joint session with the LF Driver Backport workgroup meeting (Slides) To make printing (and scanning) “just work” even if the hardware model was introduced into the market after the distribution was launched, or if the distribution simply does not ship the driver, and to let printers simply work under Linux and not under Red Hat, SUSE, … the concept of LSB-based distribution-independent binary packages and automatic download of these packages were introduced. The infrastructure at the OpenPrinting web site and the methods and guide lines of designing and packaging the drivers, and also the necessary printing requirements in the LSB are implemented, what is missing now is getting the support from the distributions. This requires once, that driver suppliers woh want to get upload permission on OpenPrinting have to fulfill strict security and QA conditions, but also additional technical infrastructure, like for example package signing are needed. In this session we will discuss these problems and requirements with representatives of the distributions and with driver integration experts. |
