Package Description

Release Date:  January 28, 2003

The current ImageWriter driver supports printing via AppleTalk to an AppleTalk-enabled ImageWriter II or ImageWriter LQ, and printing via a supported serial port to all three models of Apple ImageWriter. Keyspan USB-to-serial adapters offer fully supported serial ports. There may be other brands of USB-to-serial adapters that also work. This driver does not support color printing. 3 supported printers

The ImageWriter package includes the CUPS serial backend for Mac OS X, the cups-o-matic CUPS filter, and foomatic PPD files to support 3 printers.

Installation Notes

  • Verify now that your USB-to-serial adapter is connected. If necessary, plug it in now before installing the software.
  • Make sure that you have installed the drivers for your serial port adapter.
  • Make sure that your printer is connected and turned on before installing the software.

Printer Set Up Instructions

In general, deleting an existing printer queue is much easier than creating a new, correctly configured queue. In that regard, this installer will attempt to automatically create printer queues for all of the available serial ports that it discovers (which is why you should plug in any USB-to-serial adapters before continuing). If your Mac has any compatible serial ports you may end up with several unnecessary queues. To remove any unnecessary queue from the printer list simply select the queue within the printer list window in Printer Setup Utility (Print Center in Jaguar) and delete it.

If you ever delete an automatically created queue, and then later wish that you hadn't, simply run the installer again to recreate it (be sure to first connect any required USB-to-serial hardware). It is safe to run the installer as many times as you wish, although you should not run it while you have jobs printing. Running the installer multiple times will not install multiple copies of any files.

If you need to create a new serial printing queue with special settings you may find the CUPS web admin to be the easiest method of setup.

If your ImageWriter II or ImageWriter LQ supports AppleTalk (via the optional AppleTalk accessory card) you can print over a network. To print via AppleTalk from Mac OS X you will need to use some type of LocalTalk converter, such as a hardware Ethernet-to-LocalTalk bridge, or an old ethernet-equipped Power Mac running the Apple LocalTalk bridge software.

Regardless of your LocalTalk conversion method, this installer will create a printer queue for each AppleTalk-enabled ImageWriter that is visible on the network during installation. As with the serial printer queues, if you do not need any of the automatically created queues, simply delete them from Printer Setup Utility (Print Center in Jaguar).
